A Timeline of Key Events

The conflict between Israel and Lebanon has a long and complex history.

The 1982 Lebanon War

The 1982 Lebanon War began on 6 June 1982 when Israel invaded southern Lebanon. The invasion followed a series of attacks and counter-attacks between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), which had been based in Lebanon since 1968.

The Lebanese Civil War

The Lebanese Civil War began in 1975 and lasted until 1990. The war was a complex conflict involving a number of different groups, including the Lebanese government, the PLO, and various Christian and Muslim militias.

The 2006 Lebanon War

The 2006 Lebanon War began on 12 July 2006 and lasted until 14 August 2006. The war was fought between Israel and Hezbollah, a Lebanese Shia Islamist militant group. The war began after Hezbollah launched a cross-border raid into Israel, killing three Israeli soldiers and capturing two others. Israel responded with a series of airstrikes and a ground invasion of Lebanon.

The Current Situation

The situation in Israel and Lebanon remains tense. Hezbollah continues to operate in Lebanon, and Israel has repeatedly threatened to take military action against the group. In 2019, Israel and Hezbollah fought a brief skirmish along the Lebanese-Israeli border.
